This morning I woke up at 3am. It is the earliest I have ever woken up in my life. Why would someone do such a thing? Well, 3am is the time when myself, Cory, and Jay Hoots had to start driving in order to catch the sun rise at the top of Haleakala crater on Maui. Worth getting up at 3am for? Most definitely. We got to the top around 6am and the clouds were dancing though the peaks so you couldn't tell where the earth ended and the sky began. After a spectacular sunrise, Hoots and I hit the tarmac and rode our bikes over 20km down the road. When you google "cycling Maui" that's the first thing that pops up is riding down the Haleakala crater road, so we thought we better do the full tacky tourist experience...only we beefed it up and rode it on our downhill bikes and got a little rad on the way. When you think of Maui you think of surfing, and volcanoes, and eating fruit poolside with flowers around your neck. Rarely does the word "Maui" conjure up images of amazing mountain biking. Well, after yesterday that's the first thing Hoots and I will be thinking of when we think of this place. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the trails here a few years ago, but to my delight, they have improved and grown from an already incredible network that they had when I was here last. The red clay dirt is tacky as an aloha shirt normally, but due to the rain it got a little bit slippery...like a used cars salesman in an aloha shirt. Nonetheless, we were still able to rail the hundreds of berms, jumps, and super fast rolly sections of trails in the Makawao forest. If you come to Maui, go there. Even if you don't bike. Go there. I promise you will be blown away by it's beauty and massive Eucalyptus trees. Time to close this blog now and enjoy the sun. Aloha!
